Cessna to cut 2,000 jobs

Cessna to cut 2,000 jobs as sales wobble - Other planemakers also plan reductions

Job losses continue to mount in Wichita's aviation industry.

Cessna Aircraft told employees Monday it plans to cut another 2,000 jobs as it adjusts its 2009 production schedule for the second time.

Last week, the company warned workers to brace for job cuts, but said it was assessing the situation and did not have a specific number.

Monday's announcement follows similar news from Hawker Beechcraft and Boeing, which announced job cuts in November.

The general aviation industry has been hit by a worsening economy that has led to lower corporate profits -- a crucial component in business jet sales -- and difficulties in securing financing for potential customers. As a result, business jet customers are canceling and deferring orders.

Cessna's biggest customer, NetJets, has deferred a significant number of orders, Cessna said last week.

This is the worst downturn in the aviation economy Wichita has faced since 9/11. At that time, the area's job losses were in the double digits.
