Lufthansa & SWISS flew 33.2 million pax in first half of 09

Fall in demand necessitated further cuts in capacity

Persistent economic downturn, worldwide, reduced the Lufthansa passenger count in the first six months of 2009. The biggest German airline consequently failed to match its performance level in the first half last time round. Passenger numbers at Lufthansa fell in the first half of 2009 by 6.1 per cent to 26.7 million. In the same period, capacity was scaled back to accommodate declining demand by 2.5 per cent. Revenue seat-kilometres were down by 6.4 per cent, reducing the seat load factor by 3.1 percentage points to 75.1 per cent. Except for Middle East / Africa, the first half passenger count declined in all traffic regions.

Altogether, Lufthansa and SWISS carried a total of 33.2 million passengers aboard their aircraft in the first six months of the year, which is 4.8 per cent less than in the comparable term in the previous year. Of the total, 6.5 million flew with SWISS. The number of flights operated by the airlines in the Lufthansa Group fell by 4.7 per cent to 393,896.

Tonnage and utilisation were also down at Lufthansa Cargo in the first half 2009. During the term, the Lufthansa logistics subsidiary transported 694,000 tonnes of freight and mail, which is 20.1 per cent less than the year-earlier level. The cargo load factor fell to 59.2 per cent.

The Lufthansa Group’s first-half results will be published on 30 July 2009 and will then be available for download from www.lufthansa.com/investor-relations.
