Finnair's Indian Traffic Focuses on Delhi, abandons Mumbai

ASIA STRATEGY: Finnair's Indian Traffic Focuses on Delhi

As the winter timetable period approaches, Finnair has decided to streamline its services to India by concentrating on its six weekly departures to Delhi.

Finnair's successful Asian strategy has been based on the ability to react to changing demands in passenger traffic. The price level has weakened for flights between India and Europe and costs levels are for Finnair have been uncompetitive particularly on the Mumbai route. That's why Finnair will concentrate on flights to Delhi for the foreseeable future, and the flights to Mumbai that began in 2007 and which were paused earlier this year will not resume for the coming winter timetable season.

Flights to Delhi will continue on a six-weekly basis, while flights to Seoul in South Korea will be operated three times a week. New York flights will run daily until January 2010 and then six times weekly until the summer.

Petteri Kostermaa, responsible for Finnair route strategy planning, explains that this ratioanlization will make it possible to withdraw one Boeing MD-11 aircraft from fleet traffic at the end of October and to allocate a new Airbus aircraft to Bangkok traffic, thus achieving enhanced cost efficiency.
