Malaysia Airlines quit Beirut
With all the confusion surrounding their planned route cuts and the sudden u-turn in regards to that, no one noticed the airline has withdrawn service to BEY sometime during summer, it was served twice weekly with A330-300 via Dubai, in the past route was also served with 777 and A330-200 as well as upgraded seasonally to 744, MASkargo operated freighter service there as well for a short while couple of years ago.
JAL is the only other East Asian carrier to have served Lebanon around the 1960s or 70s, other Asian carriers PIA uptil 70s and again for a short while during 90s, Air india uptil 70s and Sri Lankan from mid 90s to 2001 also served the city.

Re: Malaysia Airlines quit Beirut
Yep, I was wondering this morning when I saw a thread on a.net.
Now, they have a route KUL-DXB-AMM, I wonder if that didn't replace BEY as the end point already some time ago. Do we know what will happen to AMM? Will it be KUL-AUH-AMM or just no more AMM as well?

Re: Malaysia Airlines quit Beirut
With the Gulf carriers so conveniently located on the way between BEY (or equivalent cities) and the Far East or even Australia, I doubt we will see a hub busting operation any time soon. The only other ports near the region with direct Asia service are CAI and IST, and the specificity of the TLV case.
ME also flew to Asia and Australia at one point, I don't see them renewing that experience very soon.
However, alliance forces may help build some bridges between regional homes of a given alliance.

In the region Amman got served by Garuda back in the 90s probably the only East Asian carrier to fly there, MD11 from Batam and Jakarta going onto London, Syria hasnt got any Asian service except the short stint by Malaysian due to Beirut closure in 2006 catering BEY traffic only.
Cathay and Thai were interested in doing BEY some years back too.
