SQ cutting Brussels?

Hi guys,

Someone of airliners.net with connections within SQ told me that SQ has decided to cut BRU (together with some other destinations).

The news has not been made public yet, but he says his source is very reliable.

Anyone with more news about this?

I really hope this is not true...

Pax flying to SQ can of course use the LH 'air-bridge' between BRU and FRA (on which SQ has put it's code) to proceed to SIN from FRA (3x daily: 2x SQ and 1x LH) or if you are booked under a LH flight nr, you can also fly MUC-SIN.

I am afraid I can confirm this news. Let's hope we can keep the freighters. This frequency is planned to go up to 12 flts/week

Now this is sad news... one of the last pax-Jumbo-aircrafts coming to Brussels will stop it's service... :(

Now we still have Royal Air Maroc in summertimes and that's it I think...

So, instead of dropping the service until the end of May, SQ is now dropping their pax service to BRU definitely? What a pitty. Another carrier for BRU history books, one of many :(

Hi guys,

after 23 years of service the pax flights to BRU are deemed to disappear.
This is indeed sad news :cry: .
Way back in oct 1979 they started with the old 707 :lol: , then we saw the dc-10, the 747 classic & the 747-300 & finally the 747-400. Lets hope we can keep the freighters in future.

Remaining pax jumbos are in the form of "irregular" RAM & Egyptair flights.

Do watch out for them. 8O

Well there is still the JFK-BRU-DAC pax link with BG, twice weekly.
And thats it folks, a big shame for BRU airport !!!!!!!!

Correct me if I am wrong, but Amman, Damascus, Beirut, Istanbul and Tel Aviv are also in Asia.

Thus, there are the following flights from BRU to Asia:

Dhaka (Bangladesh) served twice-weekly (days 3 and 7) by BG on a DC10 mixed configuration (Cargo + pax).

Damascus is served twice a week (days 3 and 6) by RB on an A320. One of these flights (on Saturdays) will stop in Beirut after 31 May. It currently stops in Aleppo (Syria), also in Asia.

To Amman, there are three weekly RJ A310s (days 3, 6 and 7).

Istanbul is served by a daily TK flight on B737, complemented by a weekly TK flight by B737-800 on saturdays.

Tel Aviv has a daily LY flight (except on shabbat), operated on either B767, B757 or B737-800.

Quite true, but what i wanted to point out is the fact that @ BRU only one carrier "BG" has a direct airlink to the "Far East" in Asia.

The rest flies to the "Near" or "Middle East" in Asia.

For this reason the "capital of Europe" & its airport should be ashamed of.

"Capital of Europe" There is the problem. Brussels is not a global centre like London Paris or Frankfurt so we get only the traffic to feed the EC's needs. Even the transatlantic carriers from here concentrate on a very few multinational compnies for their main revenues.

We are witnessing here what will probably become commonplace over the next years whilst the major carriers merge and concentrate on a few "hubs" a la USA

Exact for the current major carriers.

But the low-cost airlines (the major carriers of the future?) are developping only point-to-point relations, without hubs (and without connections, which they do not guarantee!)

Very true, however the low-cost model is built on a sector length of around 2 hours. There have been very few attempts at "low-cost" longhaul, most of which fail for one reason or another, often because the majors reduce fares for a time and lure back passengers with better on-board facilities. jetBlue in the US may change things as they are starting to fly longer sectors - time will tell!!!

What about AMS is this a global centre?
They have lots of "Far Eastern" carriers, but i suppose they have also a good tradition in "selling" their airport, or travelling worldwide!

The same good be said more or less of MUC, ZRH, etc. They all have their own strong points (but no attraction of a global centre).

BRU has a "very thin" long haul market tradition, so we just have to look @ our own little (closed) garden.
We got to travel more intercontinental, or sell our airport in a better way.
Last decenium selling our airport changed a bit in the good sense, but we have to keep "short on the ball" in the "rolling" airlinesworld!
Travelling more intercontinental is a (long) proces in peoples mind.
Anybody travelled with Biman to DAC? :lol:

So lets hope it is only a dip of a few years in the history of BRU, it's all to us now.

In the good old Sabena times, BRU had a lot of intercontinental destinations. Tokyo and Chennai in Asia, plus Sobelair to Bangkok and Phuket for example, just to name a few in Asia. In addition, China Eastern was flying to Beijing and Shangai.

Sabena had Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, New York, Boston, Detroit in the US, Montreal in Canada, Rio in Brasil; earlier also Mexico and Guatemala City in Central America.

We can sell our country and our airport when we have the will to do so.

That all is true, we saw a "few good years" in the nineties with lots of airlinks to the Far East.
Selling our airport did go well @ that time.
I remember the times when GA, TG, MU, UL, MH, NH (codeshare SN) and SQ came all together to BRU. Even TP (codeshare SN) flew to Macau with its A340. But those days are gone since 11-09-01 or before. One by one they left BRU, and did not come back, why?
Since the demise of SN, its to the otherones to say lets go to BRU, but they do not, also why?
Selling our airport is not the problem anymore i think, it really is to us: we have to travel more intercontinenetal & keep doing so.

Consolidation is an important factor. With the 3 big alliances (Skyteam, Star Alliance and OneWorld), airbridges are made between the hubs of the airlines in the alliance, and from there, feeder flights are done to the other airports.

For example: SQ now leaves BRU. With the SQ code on the BRU-FRA sector, pax will fly to FRA, and be able to take there a LH/SQ flight to SIN (which goes normally 3 times a day, can be less now due to SARS).
The same can be said about TG.

You can go on like this...
