It's the countries that have a long tradition of protectionism, (like France protecting Air France, Germany protecting Lufthansa) that object to Ryanair.
If there was still a Sabena in Belgium, you can safely bet that Ryanair would have the same problems at Charleroi.
Fortunately we have no "national carrier" any more ....

"National carrier" in the sense of a carrier that enjoys a monopoly in its country and all sorts of advantages, to the detriment of the other carriers. Like Sabena did in Belgium.
Thanks heaven, in the European Union such carriers are no more permitted (although some nationalistic countries, like France, Germany, even Italy - resist as much as possible).

hm, I cannot see that Germany resists Ryanair? They have several bases in Germany, HHN is actually a quite big one as far as I am aware. And if a country like France insists on its labour law being followed by Ryanair if they base planes and crews in France I cannot see this would be protectionist?

Very interesting article from Germany's top financial newspaper:

http://www.handelsblatt.com/unternehmen ... 94444.html

freely translated:
While Ryanair made a profit of about 300M euro last year, it is becoming increasingly obvious footing their bills is a very unprofitable business for local governments; several German regions and cities had hoped it would help stimulate their local economy and tourism, but a study shows this concept to be without future.
No wonder, since at Lubeck for instance, the public commitment to Ryanair has now risen to 2 euro for every single euro of turn-around, according to the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the airport.

What is the situation in Belgium? How much money Ryaniar gets in CRL direct and indirect and what is the ROI (return on investment) for the Walloon government?

Heard from a political party official that they would start to decrease financial help and start to get reasonal prices for airport fees etc from them. Reason for this should be some kind of meeting of a "regional airports association" some time ago???

If you start calculating and deduct the known subsidies Ryanair makes losses and SN actually performs better.
