Re: Trivia 2015 (miscellaneous news)
Being stunted in growth, however terrible, is not exactly the same as starving (dying from hunger). Great progress has been made in Africa to eradicate hunger, even though much remains to be done. And true, there is malnutrition, caused mainly by a monotonous diet. Still, that doesn't mean people are dying. It means they are not getting all the necessary vitamins and nutrients, thus limiting their development. Also the data on that map is almost 10 years old. From my frequent visits to Africa I have learned that this continent is rapidly changing and that our outdated paternalist European views are drifting away from the actual situation on the ground.
All that aside, I don't see what the ban on the transport of hunting trophies has to do with "starving children". I don't expect airlines to provide in a cure for world hunger.

You dont want them to cure the world from hunger but you do want them to stop poaching and hunting?
Neither should be an airline's problem.

Re: Trivia 2015 (miscellaneous news)
I don't expect them to send out rangers to stop poaching and hunting. I do applaud the fact that they do not allow the transport of the trophies of these hunts on their aircraft.
Lets put it this way: I wouldn't expect you to go out and patrol the streets to pursue and catch criminals. I would however expect from any law abiding citizen that they don't allow criminals to use their homes to hide in from the police.

Air Baltic has stepped up safety measures after a flight was grounded due to both pilots failing alcohol tests.
Now the Latvian airline has increased the number of random daily breathalyser tests for its crew and is introducing pre-duty breathalyser tests for 100% of the safety-critical personnel.
Air Baltic said it had suspended the four individuals involved in the Oslo-Chania flight and is preparing for their dismissal due to the damage caused.

The four Latvian crew members who abused alcohol are now in jail for two weeks in Norway, pending their appearance before a judge. Pilot had 0.4 pro mille, co-pilot 1.2 pro mille, the two stewardesses respectively 0.4 and 0.8 pro mille. The legal limit in Norway is 0.2 pro mille.airazurxtror wrote:Air Baltic said it had suspended the four individuals involved in the Oslo-Chania flight and is preparing for their dismissal due to the damage caused.
If they are guilty, they could be sentenced to two years in jail.

Uzbekistan Airlines says it will begin weighing passengers – along with their carry-on bags – as part of an effort to "ensure flight safety."SN539 wrote:(Let me hope you're joking and you don't realy think what you writed ...airazurxtror wrote:Speaking of weight :
- the weight of the luggage is stricly limited and a kilo too much can be expensive
- the weight of the passengers is not limited and a passenger weighing, say, 30 kg more than another will pay exactly the same price
It's not fair !
Uzbekistan Air promised individual passenger information would not be revealed, saying the combined passenger-and-baggage weight data would be categorized only as belonging to a man, woman or child.
"According to the rules of International Air Transport Association, airlines are obliged to carry out the regular procedures of preflight control passengers weighing with hand baggage to observe requirements for ensuring flight safety," Uzbekistan Air says in its statement.
Samoa Air, a small island-hopping airline in the South Pacific, began charging passengers by weight in 2012.
Even today, the carrier boasts of the pay-by-weight scheme on its website, declaring: "A world first: The 'Samoa Air System' of pay by weight 'Pay only for what you weigh'!"
Samoa Air flies turboprop flights within the Samoan islands. And, in 2013, it expanded its weight-based pricing policy to several short-hop international flights to the U.S. territory of American Samoa.
In a 2013 interview, Samoa Air CEO Chris Langton told The Associated Press that its "planes are run by weight and not by seat, and travelers should be educated on this important issue. The plane can only carry a certain amount of weight and that weight needs to be paid. There is no other way."

Jet Airways, which has placed orders for 10 Boeing Dreamliner (B 787-9) aircraft, will start taking the delivery of the planes from 2017, chief executive of the airline Cramer Ball said on Friday.
The airline, which currently has 116 aircraft, expects its fleet growth over the next 2-3 years to be flat. The B 787-9 aircraft are expected to be deployed in the airline’s international routes.

A computer problem at a Virginia air traffic control centre led to significant flight delays today at airports in the Washington and New York City areas, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.
The FAA "is diagnosing an automation problem at an air traffic control center in Leesburg, Virginia," FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen told CNN. "We are directing high-altitude traffic around the affected airspace," Bergen said.
Airports with delays include Baltimore-Washington International Airport, where departures were stalled up to two hours as of 1:15 p.m. EST, the FAA said.

Flights to and from Baltimore-Washington International, Newark International, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, New York John F. Kennedy International, New York LaGuardia International and Tampa International experienced delays because of the problem.
Washington National, Washington Dulles International, Philadelphia International, Miami International, and the Teterboro airports had been affected earlier in the day.

Air traffic is back to normal. According to the FAA, there were 492 delays and 476 cancellations related to yesterday's ATC outage. The cause is still unknown.sn26567 wrote:A computer problem at a Virginia air traffic control centre led to significant flight delays today at airports in the Washington and New York City areas, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.
Our member (and former moderator) Dave Liebens is among the victims: he was in Raleigh-Durham, booked on a flight to Newark and from there to Belgium. His first flight yesterday was cancelled, he was rebooked on a flight today and he will arrive in Belgium with a 24 hrs delay. This being the US, no reimbursement whatsoever for meals and accommodation...
Here is a nice picture of the EDZ zone void of aeroplanes

Air India flies Mumbai to Newark non-stop, but without baggage!
For the past six days, Air India's Boeing 777 aircraft that travels 12,500km from Mumbai to Newark in the US non-stop in over 15 hours has been forced to fly lighter because the monsoon weather conditions and obstacles near the airport would have otherwise made the takeoff roll and subsequent climb of this super heavy plane unsafe.
Unknown to passengers, AI has been leaving behind a large number of checked-in bags to lighten the aircraft. In a week, 84 tonnes of luggage had been left behind.
On Friday's Mumbai-Newark flight 191, the airline carried 50 tonnes of such bags by reducing the quantity of fuel. A stopover had to be scheduled at Frankfurt, where the plane refuelled, and continued onwards to Newark.

And when exactly will they see their luggage back?
Re: Trivia 2015 (miscellaneous news)
With Air India, you're guaranteed to have surprises. But in this case it is mentioned in the article that a flight with some of the baggage left behind departed with less fuel (to be able to take more baggage) and made a fuel stop in FRA.luchtzak wrote:And when exactly will they see their luggage back?

Re: Trivia 2015 (miscellaneous news)
FWIW- depending the accounting standards used, quite few airlines may ironically be suffering significant negative impacts to their balance sheet for next year because of their hedging of fuel when it was said to be the right time a few months ago, at prices much higher than the current market value of the contracts.
Its purely an accounting issue of course which disappears the moment the fuel is used, but still, it may make some financial results look very different from the operating results for a while at quite some places, given the importance of this commodity to their business.
