With much appreciation and sadness – air cargo industry has lost air cargo veteran Ron King
It is with great regret Volga-Dnepr has to report that Ron King, one of the air cargo veterans in the USA, has suddenly passed away on the 19th of July, 2019. He would have turned 77 on July, 22nd and has certainly left an immense imprint on the air cargo sector in the USA in general and on Volga-Dnepr’s development in particular.
With almost 50-year experience in logistics, Ron King has contributed to successful implementation of various transport projects, being eager to share his professionalism, extensive experience in logistics and in-depth market knowledge. Throughout his career path he held multiple executive positions in Curtis Air Services, Transamerica Airlines, and World Airways.
He joined Volga-Dnepr in 2001 as a Commercial Director in the USA and during almost 14 years was building the image of Volga-Dnepr in the USA, gaining new projects, attracting new customers, strengthening Volga-Dnepr’s market position and sharing his tremendous knowledge with colleagues.
“During his time with Volga-Dnepr, not only has he reinforced the company’s position, but has also been a tutor to the whole team members who engrossed his knowledge, experience and personal approach to business development. Ron King will be sadly missed as he was a true personality who possessed the unique knowledge of air freight. His contribution will always be highly appreciated” – commented Konstantin Vekshin, Executive President of Charter Cargo Operation at Volga-Dnepr.
Our sincere condolences go to his family, closest friends and colleagues.

Hero pilot and aviation safety icon, Al Haynes, has died at the age of 87.
In 1989, he was the Captain that led his crew to land the severely crippled United flight UA232 in Sioux City, beating the odds to save 185 of his passengers after the engine mounted in the tail of the DC-10 had exploded at 37,000 feet. Shrapnel from the exploding engine had severed all the hydraulic lines.
From that moment on, Haynes couldn’t budge any of the flight-control surfaces on the wings and the tail. It was as if, when driving a car, the steering wheel would no longer turn the wheels.
One of Captain Haynes' most important decisions that day was not being afraid to ask for and accept help, from all available sources. Crucially, he asked Captain Fitch, a passenger and fellow DC-10 pilot who had practised this scenario in the sim, onto the flight deck.
When United UA232 slammed onto the Sioux City runway, the jet cartwheeled, broke up, and exploded in flames, killing 111 of those aboard. But 185 survived.

RIP for that anonymous Guinee guy who thaught that he could survive Conakry-Casablanca in the wheel well of a Boeing 737 (30 Sept, CN-ROA, B737-800, RAM AT526).
There's a shocking video by ground staff at Casablanca on YouTube. Then search "un guinéen retrouvé mort accroché à un vol de la Royale Air Maroc".

Belgian sculptor Henri Van Herwegen, better known under his artist's name Panamarenko, died today at age 79.
His work 'Scimitar' decorated the Diamond Hall of Brussels Airport and was damaged during the terror attacks of 22 March 2016. It was restored and reinstalled in June of the same year, only to be sold at an auction in 2018.
Panamarenko was also the godfather of the first Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner OO-JDL of TUIfly Belgium, which he christened during a demonstration flight at Ostend Airport on 10 December 2013.

Re: Blue Skies forever
Hm, not so nice to see a "V1" look-alike. Wasn't this artist from Antwerp? That city suffered grievously from them, exactly 70 years ago. My mother's father was among the victims. But of course, such an "artist" has a certain degree of liberty/artistic freedom. I rather liked the characterisation on vrt-nieuws: "geniale bricoleur", +/- "genious tinkerer".
Re: Blue Skies forever
Last Thursday, Flemish tv VRT went to his (new) homestead, for an interview that was supposed to be broadcasted on his 80th birthday in February 2020. VRT will partially broadcast that interview on Monday 16th December, on Canvas (VRT-2), in "Terzake".
Re: Blue Skies forever
Actually, the V1's were an important inspiration for Panamarenko: he saw them flying as a 5 year old...jan_olieslagers wrote: ↑15 Dec 2019, 19:43 Hm, not so nice to see a "V1" look-alike. Just as the V2's were an inspiration for Hergé (Objectif Lune) ... and they were even more deadly...

Re: Blue Skies forever
Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson, born August 26, 1918, passed away on this February 24, 2020, at the age of 101. She was an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and the subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights. During her 35-year career at NASA and its predecessor, she earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the tasks. The space agency noted her "historical role as one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist".
Johnson's work included calculating trajectories, launch windows and emergency return paths for Project Mercury spaceflights, including those for astronauts Alan Shepard, the first American in space, and John Glenn, the first American in orbit, and rendezvous paths for the Apollo Lunar Module and command module on flights to the Moon. Her calculations were also essential to the beginning of the Space Shuttle programme, and she worked on plans for a mission to Mars. In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was portrayed by Taraji P. Henson as a lead character in the 2016 film Hidden Figures.
In 2019, Johnson was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
