Re: Cargo plane reportedly crashed in Dubai
The plane is believed to belong to an US company.
There are probably no survivors from the flight crew.
Cars on the highway are also on fire.

The first pictures from the scene:

The airplane barely missed the Emirates flight crew compound, many EK pilots have seen it soar over their rooftops before impacting the ground in a fireball.

Re: Cargo plane reportedly crashed in Dubai
I have several reports on my FB of former Sabena colleagues living in the Dubai Silicon Oasis compound. It passed overhead the compound at about 200 to 300ft and crashed south of Emirates Road, just after the military camp. Earlier reports of a crash on Emirates road are apparently not correct. They were lucky.
Re: Cargo plane reportedly crashed in Dubai
I'm having some trouble understanding what happened here. Especially with regards to the position of the aircraft. Most reports seem to agree that a fire was what caused the emergency.
Now, some reports are saying this happened right after takeoff. Others are mentioning the airplane being over Bahraini airspace and tuned into Bahrain Control ATC when the fire started. They elected to return to DXB while dumping fuel, and for some reason went around? Things started to go downhill from there very fast from that moment on... That's how I understand it.
Anyone with more info who can clear this out for me?

The reports in Aviation Herald have the same trouble as you: http://www.avherald.com/h?article=4307772e&opt=0sdbelgium wrote:I'm having some trouble understanding what happened here. Especially with regards to the position of the aircraft.
Some say the crash happened right after take-off, others say that the plane crashed after returning fto Dubai after an emergency (fire in the cockpit) was declared.

Re: Cargo plane reportedly crashed in Dubai
I witnessed the crash tonight from my home in DSO (large Emirates pilots compound), Dubai... Heard and then saw the aircraft flew exactly over my house at an estimated 300ft...Very low thrust, likely Idle and quite fast (estimated 250kts or so). Surely not at approach speed but faster. NO signs of fire/smoke outside. Looked like it had a very shallow rate of descend, bleeding off speed while almost flying level. A few seconds later we unfortunately saw a fireball one only sees in movies and realized it was all over... It did not crash on a road as the media is saying. Crashed on the edge of a new construction area where hopefully nobody lives for the times being.
Latest speculation: Aircraft took-off 30R, Dubai-Cologne. Fire/Smoke started about 120NM outbound Dubai. Declared a Mayday and returned to Dubai. Crew stated that they did not have/or could not see, SPD, ALT, HDG and had trouble with COMMS. Tried straight in approach 12L (shortest). Became hot/high (report of 250kts/7000ft/6nm) and continued descend over DXB with a right turn. Crashed on beginning of right downwind 12 just a few km beside our house.
MEDIA: please do NOT contact me, not interested in giving more info than above!

Preliminary report by the GCAA:
GCAA Announces the Preliminary Report on the ACCIDENT INVOLVING UPS6 Boeing 747 – 400 on 3rd September, 2010
Category : GCAA, Date : Sep, 05 2010
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), announced today the preliminary report on the fatal accident of Boeing 747 - 400 Cargo airplane on 3rd September 2010.
The UPS6 B744 had departed from Dubai International Airport at 14:53 UTC (6:53pm local time) headed to Koln-Bonn (Cologne) - Germany. At 15:15 UTC (7:15pm local time) information was received from Bahrain that the aircraft was returning to Dubai Airport with a smoke in the cockpit, unable to maintain altitude and requested the airport for landing.
The UAE ATC Centre issued a clearance when aircraft was approximately 40 kilometer from touchdown. The aircraft was high on the approach and was at 8500ft at 24 kilometer from touchdown. It passed the overhead the airfield very high and made a right turn. Position reports were passed the tower as well as advising that all runways were available for the aircraft to land on. The aircraft tracked south west and rapidly lost altitude. At approximately 15:42 UTC (7:42pm local time), radar contact was lost. The B744 crashed in in an unpopulated area between the Emirates Road and Al Ain Highway after 50 minutes from departure and after returning back from Bahrain FIR (Flight Information Region(.
The GCAA responded by launching an immediate investigation team who are currently on site collecting evidence, analyzing the initial onsite evidence, coordinating with all of the emergency services to secure the accident site, liaising with the aircraft manufacturer technical specialists and international accident investigation bodies who have invited to assist the GCAA onsite in the UAE under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13.
The investigation team recovered the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) approximately 6 hours after the accident; the onsite GCAA investigation team is continuing the recovery effort to locate the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR), while investigating the aircraft structure, systems, engines and flight controls as part of the forensic evidence collecting and data capturing activities associated with major air accident investigation.
A team from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will arrive to UAE today to assist the GCAA team in the crash investigation.
Coordination activities with the regional (ANS) is also continuing in the retrieval of important communications and flight planning material crucial to the successful conclusion of this investigation.

" Officials in the United Arab Emirates have said -- and a U.S. official confirmed -- that the plane's cockpit voice recorder has been examined and nothing on it indicates an explosion. Explosions have distinctive sound signatures, and that would have been recorded on the device, the official said."luchtzak wrote:Al Qaida claims responsablity for this crash !
The UAE said it has "eliminated the possibility of an onboard explosion, following a detailed onsite investigation of the wreckage."
