CRL : All flights banned from landing on RWY 07-25 after 13SEP2018

Post by Homo Aeroportus »

Not a single flight will be authorized to land at EBCI on RWY 25 or 07 as from 13 September 2018.

The reason : runway 07-25 will not exist anymore.
It will be replaced by RWY 06-24

Due to the North Magnetic Pole drift, the current RWY designator (QFU) 25 needs to be "renamed" 24 due to the rounding of its magnetic bearing (was 245.47° and drifting to lower values).

Well, cheaper and faster than building a new one !

Just curious, has there ever been a runway designator in the world which had to be corrected more than once for this particular reason? For example 07-25 => 06-24 => 05-23?

I don't have an example of such multiple changes but most probably it did happen here and there.

The annual Magnetic Variation varies more rapidly at higher latitudes especially when the RWY orientation is at odds with the location of the Magnetic North.
In fact in Canada, way up North in what they call the NDA, Northern Domestic Airspace, all aerodromes have their runways identified as True and not Mag for that reason.

It also seems that the rate of change of the MagVar shows an increase in the last 50 years. But nevertheless it will take 30-50 years to see EBBR in need for an adjustment.
Note that this adjustment is not something critical that must be done next week. It is a convention to "name" the RWY according to its Magnetic orientation (rounded to the nearest 10 degrees ...)

There is another factor to consider in "renaming" a runway is when their QFU is set wrongly on purpose.
LFPG/CDG is an example with four parallel runways. All aligned 265°Mag but named 26L, 26R, 27L and 27R for ease of ID and to avoid confusion.

It doesn't alter my opinion on basing runway ID's on magnetic measurements: in this 21st century that is prehistoric. ID'ing ALL runways by true heading would save a lot of hassle - reducing cost and improving simplicity, thus also improving safety.

"True, true man" !
:D

My taxi's on finals.
Looks like I'll be home by 02am, 2 hours late but still earlier than "Home from Christmas".

Signing off for the day.
